Personal Statement:
Sculptors will tell you that they don’t create a statue, they just reveal the shape that was inside the rock
all along. My philosophy of mental health treatment has many parallels with this idea. As a clinician, I see it as my first responsibility to listen to my clients the way a sculptor “listens” to the rock, to see the possibilities inside them that they may not even be able to articulate at first. Then, with whatever tool is appropriate to each particular case – not chisels, but CBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing, and so on -- I help them chip away at the obstacles that stand between them and the people that they want to be.
