Counseling for Couples

Oftentimes, when otherwise loving relationships run into trouble, one or both partners wonder:

“Do we really belong together?”

Does this sound familiar?

Do you sometimes feel as though your partner is more of a roommate?

No fun?

No communication?

No intimacy?

At Real Life Counseling, we’ve helped couples in the exact same situation. We know that relationships can struggle in countless ways, and counseling is the way back to a fun, loving, intimate relationship that is healthy for both partners.

Who Is Couples Counseling For?

Couples counseling is for any type of relationship, whether you’re:

  • Dating
  • Engaged
  • Living Together
  • Married

If you’re in a relationship that is in any way struggling, Real Life Counseling can help.

What Kinds of Issues Does Couples Counseling Address?

There doesn’t need to be an actual issue in order to seek couples counseling. Many couples go simply to make sure their relationship remains healthy.

However, for most couples, the main focus of counseling is restoring communication. Once communication begins breaking down in a relationship, it’s much easier for other problems to arise.

Some examples of specific problems that bring couples to our office are:

  • Emotional Distance
  • Infidelity
  • Money Problems
  • Parenting Issues
  • Sexual Dissatisfaction
  • Trust Issues

Plenty of other problems exist, too. If you don’t see your particular challenge on the list, that doesn’t mean you and your partner wouldn’t benefit from couples counseling.

The Goal of Couples Counseling

While the primary goal of couples counseling may seem to be resolving the problem that brought you in, we like to think it also goes far deeper than that.

Research has shown that for a relationship to last, partners must improve their friendship, learn to resolve conflicts, and look for ways they can support each others’ hopes and dreams.

To that end, our counselors tend to focus on helping couples with:

  • Increasing levels of affection, respect, and closeness
  • Overcoming conflicts
  • Getting “unstuck”
  • Generating greater levels of understanding
  • Staying calm during conflicts

You may have specific goals you’d like to work on with your partner as well. Our therapists can definitely help with this.

When Is It Time to Seek Couples Counseling?

Studies have shown that it takes the average couple six years from the time they recognize problems before they finally go to therapy.

Obviously, you want to avoid this scenario at all costs. It’s far better to address a small problem – even one that feels like it might be insignificant – than struggle for years before finally getting help.

Sometimes, the problem isn’t very clear. “Something” just isn’t right. Counseling can help bring this issue to the surface, so we can find a resolution and you and your partner can go back to being happy.

In short, a good time to call us is the moment you realize that a reoccurring problem is keeping your relationship from reaching its potential.
