At Real Life Counseling, we have counselors who are members of and have years of experience supporting and working with lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, adults, and families. In many ways, LGBTQ people are just like anyone else. They are unique with their own individual problems. In other ways, the LGBTQ community faces unique challenges that compact and complicate their ability to move through emotional stress and traumas. Some of those challenges include rejection by friends and family, societal oppression, confusion with gender roles and expectations, internalized homophobia or transphobia and increased risks for being a victim of person-on-person crimes, and higher rates of suicide.
The LGBTQ community faces mental health conditions just like the rest of the population, but they experience more negative mental health outcomes due to prejudice and other biases. The counselors at Real Life know work hard to create an LGBTQ-inclusive space that is welcoming, supportive, knowledgeable and free from bias to ensure more positive outcomes.
